Carey Schmidt joined the firm in 2003 as a law clerk while attending the University of Montana School of Law. There, Mr. Schmidt was the publication editor for the Public Land and Resources Law Review, and earned his J.D. in 2005.

His principal areas of practice are insurance defense, coverage litigation, real property law, construction litigation, personal injury litigation, insurance bad faith, business litigation, and business law.

Mr. Schmidt was born and raised in Helena, Montana before attending Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science in 1998. He then pursued graduate work at Portland State in Wetland Science. He worked for the USFS, as an Alaskan Kayak Guide, and as an Environmental Consultant in Portland, Oregon before returning to Montana.

He is a member of the State Bar of Montana, the American Bar Association, the Western Montana Bar Association, and the Defense Research Institute. Mr. Schmidt is admitted to practice in all State and Federal courts in Montana.

Mr. Schmidt is an avid outdoorsman, volunteering his time as ski instructor for persons with disabilities, and as a wilderness hike leader. He was active with SMART in Portland, Oregon, providing leadership and guidance to at-risk youth. He continues to enjoy hunting, fishing, kayaking and skiing.
